The CS144 Alternator

cs144a.jpg

I obtained a CS144 alternator from a local salvage yard supposedly from a 1996 Caprice. I then got an adapter harness from alternatorparts.com, and a spacer from a 1985 Caprice. Since the distance between the bolt holes off my original 17SI alternator and the CS144 are the same, the original brackets worked fine. I added some JL Audio 4AWG fine copper strand wire and some Lightning Audio connectors to hook it up to the battery. This alternator is powerful, you can really feel it in the powerband.

Ramchargers Dual Fan Setup and Modine Aluminum Radiator

A few years back I had purchased a 3 row brass radiator that a local parts store had insisted was the best. I came across a Modine Aluminum radiator in the junk yard and tried it, and was amazed how well it cooled. I decided to ditch the single fan that I had thermostatically controlled with an adjustable Hayden unit from O'reillys, and add a dual fan setup from Ramchargers.com. I had to modify the shroud a little to get it to fit, in particular the housing lip that extended 1/16" of an inch on each side. I used a bench grinder and also took a hacksaw to the mouting tabs for clearance issues with engine components. Once the lips were ground down, it fit nice and snug, and then I got a universal mouting kit with zip ties. I drilled through shroud in four points and ran the ties through, and cut the ends. This thing looks custom made, and cools the car substantially better, 220 max on 100 degree days with the A/C on.

Just in case you are wondering, I cut that funky connector plug off since no one makes a connector that plugs into it.
I cut the existing shroud straight down with a battery powered reciprocating saw, and drilled holes to hold the wiring loom, then wired it all up to a terminal block I found at Carquest. I used dielectric "bulb grease" and waterproof audio butt connectors since there was high amperage. No problems yet since 07/2005. These fans are made by Valeo, a european OEM and aftermarket parts maker.
